DJ Kool Herc created a new technique that isolated the instrumental portion of the record which emphasized the drumbeat—the "break." This breakbeat DJing formed the basis of Hip-Hop music.

He also coined the term "break-boys" and "break-girls", or more simply b-boys and b-girls,to describe the new dancers who were creating their own style. Their movement would change dance forever and is a foundational pillar of hip-hop culture.
