The Miami, Florida hip-hop duo, City Girls, released the visuals for their summer smash, “Twerkulator.” The Godzilla-inspired music video featured loud and elaborate costumes and choreography, all directed by Missy Elliot. The video begins with a Missy Elliot narration, “This is an emergency. This is not a test. Everyone, please take shelter immediately!” Missy alerts the city as “The Twerkulators” take over the city.
Missy Elliott, known for her outstandingly creative music videos, from her eccentric costume choices to the satirical nature of her visuals, Elliot's work on the City Girls’ new visuals stays consistent with her brand. The Godzilla twerkers, costume design, and dance numbers are all some Missy Elliot staples sprinkled all over the video. The choreography in the video is reminiscent of her big dance numbers in iconic music videos like "Get Ur Freak On" and "She's a Bitch".
City Girls released the single in May. The track samples 1982 classic “Planet Rock” by Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force. The duo recently performed “Twerkulator” at the 2021 BET Awards. As the song picks up traction on social media platforms like Tik-Tok, it is set to be one of the biggest songs of the summer.
