Lupe Fiasco recently wrapped an upcoming project that he believes could be his Illmatic. Lupe attempted to record the project in only 24 hours, but it turned out to be recorded in about three days. The Chicago emcee is still ripping the mic ahead of the album’s release as he just dropped a freestyle rapping over none other than Drake’s intro to his new album Certified Lover Boy.
On Lupe’s new freestyle “Diet Soda Poetry,” a flip of “Champagne Poetry,” the Chicago rapper credits Drake for inspiring him to up his game in the studio. Lupe wrote on his Twitter before dropping the track, “Champagne Poetry is my #1 running it back to back.”
“Just left album mode with me, and my nigga Trakk/And Drake dropped this shit, got me thinking about going back,” Lupe raps over the second half of Drake’s instrumental.
Lupe showed love to Drake’s CLB just last week before the album’s release stating, “Drake will always get a listen from me,” read his September 3 tweet. “Entertaining, consistent, and cool. And he be talking mad shit.”
“Diet Soda Poetry” adds to Lupe’s run of freestyles he has been releasing this year. Previously rapping on classic beats from Kendrick Lamar, Jay Electronica, Jadakiss, and Cam’ron.
What did you think about the freestyle? Is Lupe proving to still be a top-tier MC?
