DJ Premier gave fans a special episode of his Youtube series “So Wassup?” as he tells the story of his classic collaboration with the incredible Janet Jackson with the remix to her song “Together Again.”
The iconic songwriting duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis recruited Preemo for the track’s remix in 1997 for her classic album The Velvet Rope. Expecting to be remixing the original song, Preemo started to study the album and the feel of the original track. Janet Jackson actually re-recorded the entire song with new vocals over a different instrumental. “When they asked me to do it, I studied the original album version. I thought that’s what I was going to work on,” Preemo explained. “She totally cut a whole new version.”
Premier ended up mixing two different versions of the track. Much like his work on D’Angelo’s “Lady(Remix),” he released a “Just Tha Bass” version of the song where Preemo focussed on the song’s drums and bass.
