DJ Premier Tells The Story Of D'Angelo's "Lady(Remix)"

DJ Premier is back with another episode of his Youtube series “So Wassup?”. In this episode, he tells the story of the making of D’Angelo’s 1996 single “Lady (Remix).”  Preemo and D’Angelo became good friends as they were label mates at Virgin Records.

In 1996, D’Angelo was on fire. After a string of singles and the release of his debut album, Brown Sugar, D’Angelo would build on the hype, doing multiple remixes of his biggest singles. The neo-soul star recruited DJ Premier for the production on the remix as well as the then up-and-coming AZ for a remix suitable for the club and local house parties. “ I just took the same groove he had… and added a stab like I did on ‘Unbelievable’ for Notorious B.I.G.”

The music video for the remix was a time capsule of the neo-soul era of hip-hop and R&B. The video featured cameos from then new-comer Erykah Badu, Faith Evans, and Joi of the Dungeon Family. “It was real simple and basic, white background…Damn, I wish I was there.”

What do you think about the origin story of D’Angelo’s “Lady Remix (Remix).” Make sure to check out the full video below and keep it locked here for more “So Wassup?” news.
