On August 11, 2021, hip-hop will be celebrating its 48th birthday, this time with an official holiday recognized in the United States, with Hip-Hop Celebration Day. On August 11, 1973, a young DJ from the Bronx hosted a back-to-school party in his apartment building of 1520 Sedgwick Avenue. The party introduced the inception of the breakbeat ad Kool Herc spun records back and forth, allowing partygoers to dance longer, eventually leading to the birth of breakdancing, creating what we know today as hip-hop culture.
Rock the Bells collaborates with hip-hop pioneer DJ Kool Herc for a special experience that will stream live from our Instagram account, @rockthebells, on August 11, 2021.
The event will focus on giving back to the community. We will be raising awareness and resources for the educational organization New York Edge, whose mission is to help bridge the opportunity gap among students in underinvested communities. Donations support free after-school programs in all five boroughs. Make sure to check out the link and donate if possible. newyorkedge.org/give
