Dilla's Delights, the Detroit doughnut shop run by the family of the late production great J Dilla, has permanently closed. Dilla's uncle Herman Hayes posted the news on Instagram.
"We don't quite know which direction we're going to go in and where we're going to be, but, you know, we're working on some things," Hayes says. The shop previously closed in 2019 as Hayes recuperated from cancer; it opened again in early 2020 just before the coronavirus pandemic forced businesses to close.
But it may not be the end of Dilla's Delights.
"We're looking for a home," Hayes adds. "We're homeless!"
Hayes opened the shop in 2016, a decade after Dilla, (born James Yancey), died in 2006 at age 32 after he'd been diagnosed with lupus. According to the Detroit Metro Times, Hayes said that he hopes to reopen at a new location.
